چکیده

Mucormycosis is an uncommon acute and often fatal opportunistic fungal infection that is classically seen with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus with acidosis, acute leukemia, or other immunosuppressive conditions. A relatively new association of mucormycosis occurring in patients with iron and aluminum excess who receive deferoxamine therapy has been reported with increasing frequency. While most commonly noted in patients receiving hemodialysis, mucormycosis develops in patients with various iron overload states such as thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and myelodysplasia where deferoxamine may be used. We report a case of mucormycosis in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and was treated with deferoxamine for transfusioninduced iron overload.

Pulmonary invasive mucormycosis in a patient with secondary iron overload following deferoxamine therapy.

Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is an acute and often fatal opportunistic fungal infection. Predisposing factors in the development of mucormycosis are nonspecific and include hyperglycemia, hematologic malignancies, neutropenia, pharmacologic immunosuppression, solid organ or bone marrow/stem cell transplantation, burns, trauma, malnutrition, and intravenous drug use. Mucormycosis has also been des...

Two cases of disseminated mucormycosis in patients following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

We describe two cases of disseminated mucormycosis following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Both patients were suffering from chronic graft-ver-sus-host disease (GVHD) and treated with prolonged administration of corticosteroid. In both cases, the initial symptoms were high fever and left flank pain. Involved organs were the spleen, right kidney and the right lung in one case, an...

A massive intraventricular thrombosis by disseminated mucormycosis in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome during deferoxamine therapy.

A 70-year-old man with a 2-year history of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), refractory anemia, was hospitalized because of pneumonia. He had received frequent transfusions because of anemia. The total amount of blood transfusions he had received during the 7 months before admission was 44 units. In the previous 6 months, he had intravenously received 500 mg of deferoxamine after every transfusio...

Financial analysis of chronic transfusion for stroke prevention in sickle cell disease.

Chronic red blood cell transfusion can prevent many of the manifestations of sickle cell disease. The medical costs of chronic transfusion and management of associated side effects, especially iron overload, are considerable. This study was undertaken to evaluate the financial impact of chronic transfusion for stroke prevention in patients with sickle cell anemia. Outpatient charges pertaining ...
